Microsoft is reportedly taking over data center construction in Texas after OpenAI declined to pursue it. This will make the two companies neighbors in one of the country’s largest areas of artificial intelligence (AI). The project, located in Abilene, Texas, is being developed by the data center company Crusoe, which has now confirmed that it is working with the company that was previously a provider of cloud network equipment and still has a share of about 27% in ChatGPT-maker. However, both companies are pursuing AI development separately, despite being based in the same location. The announcement comes after OpenAI said it dropped plans to expand its Abilene project earlier this month. In a report written to Fortune, Crusoe co-founder and CEO Chase Lochmiller said that this data center will be the one. “Industrial foundation for American AI”. The CEO of the company also noted that Crusoe is continuing to builda power plant linked to the Microsoft project that will generate 900 megawatts. “at a pace the industry has never seen before.”
What we know about Cursoe’s Texas data center projects with Microsoft and OpenAI
The Abilene area was originally planned as a cryptocurrency mining center before the developers improved and expanded the project after the rise in demand for AI facilities after the launch of ChatGPT.Crusoe announced that this site will be part of its agreement with Microsoft, which includes building two new “AI factory” equipment, as well as an on-site power plant. The development will sit next to a separate, larger campus that Crusoe is already building for OpenAI and Oracle, bringing several AI infrastructure projects into one place. However, the Microsoft plant will be larger than the 350-megawatt, gas-fired power plant included in the OpenAI project with Oracle, the company added.Crusoe has already completed two data center buildings for OpenAI and its cloud partner Oracle, and SoftBank is also involved as an investment partner. Currently, the company is building six more buildings for OpenAI and Oracle, and they are expected to be completed by the end of this year. The existing OpenAI project, which is part of the Stargate data center project, was announced by the President of the United States, Donald Trump as part of the AI investment effort that he described as. “a powerful declaration of confidence in America’s capabilities.”In a post shared on X, Sachin Katti, head of OpenAI computing resources, wrote, “Our Stargate site is one of the largest AI data center companies in the United States. We considered expanding it further, but in the end we chose to put that extra capacity elsewhere.”Katti added that OpenAI has more than half a dozen sites being developed across the United States, including a project with Oracle in Wisconsin.Meanwhile, two more Microsoft facilities in Abilene, announced last week, will bring the total number of data center facilities in the area to 10, with a combined capacity of 2.1 gigawatts.Oracle said the on-site power plant will serve as a backup, as the data centers rely heavily on the regional power grid, including power from nearby wind farms.

What energy sources should new data centers prioritize?
The expansion of AI infrastructure has also raised concerns about emissions. During a visit to Abilene last year, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said, “We are burning gas to run this data center,” adding that “in the long term of Stargate”, the goal is to move to other sources of energy.
